Welcome back to the ‘How Far Can Your Money Take You?’ series! I had previously shared how far $1,000 and$1,500 can take you, and this time, you picked the budget and the people have spoken. Today, we're working with $2,500 Canadian Dollars.

This is the largest budget we have worked with so far, and I think it opens up a really exciting range of places that feel genuinely special without being something you need to plan too far in advance. Let's get into it.

You know the drill by now: this budget is for one person – transportation, accommodation, food and activities, all included.

Within Ontario: Niagara-on-the-Lake

I know what you’re already thinking. No, this isn’t Niagara Falls, it is better. Niagara-on-the-Lake is a completely different experience, and it lowkey gives Italy with the cobblestone streets, vineyards, farm-to-table restaurants and an Old Town you'll enjoy exploring for hours. It's about an hour and a half from Toronto, which makes it one of the most accessible luxury-feeling trips on this list. Budget $100 for gas and you're off to a great start.

Where to Stay in Niagara-on-the-Lake

Accommodation is where a good chunk of this budget goes, but it's worth it. For around $1,000, you can book a 3-night stay at a beautiful boutique hotel within walking distance of everything you’d ideally want to see in the Old Town. This is one of those trips where the place you stay genuinely adds to the experience, so you might want to make the splurge.

What to Do in Niagara-on-the-Lake

The town itself is walkable and stunning, and doing any or all of the activities below will still keep you firmly within the budget. You don't need to do all of these, just pick what means the most to you, and it will cost you a total of $500 at the most.

  • Explore the Old Town: free

  • Wine tasting at a local vineyard: from $20

  • Perfume making experience at Orris Labs: from $89

  • Afternoon tea at Prince of Wales Hotel: from $60

  • Spa day at White Oaks Resort & Spa: day pass from $33.90, spa treatments $200+

  • Picnic at Queen's Royal Park: free

  • Visit Fort George National Historic Site: free

  • See a show at the Royal George Theatre: from $76

  • Drive to Niagara Falls: free

Feeding

$500 for food over 3 nights in Niagara-on-the-Lake is very comfortable. The restaurant scene here is very impressive, and you deserve to treat yourself to at least one proper sit-down dinner. You're on a $2,500 budget. You've earned it.

The Budget Breakdown

Within Canada: Victoria, BC

Victoria is one of those places in Canada that genuinely surprises people. It's charming, culturally rich, and sits on an island off the coast of British Columbia. What more do you want to feel like you’re on a vacation? Four nights here feels like a completely different world from Toronto, and $2,500 covers it with (surprisingly) some spare change.

Getting There & Where to Stay in Victoria, BC

return ticket from Toronto comes to around $600, and booking somewhere central (like the downtown core and inner harbour area) are very walkable and keep additional transportations costs lower.

Accommodation for 4 nights will run between $800 and $900 depending on what you book. A well-located boutique hotel or Airbnb in the inner harbour area is the sweet spot.

What to Do in Victoria, BC

Victoria has a pretty good mix of free and affordable activities, and since it's an island, a water activity is basically non-negotiable. I don't make the rules.

  • The Butchart Gardens: about $45 for access to 5 different themed gardens and it’s worth every dollar

  • Walk downtown to see the inner harbour and the Parliament Buildings for free

  • Explore Chinatown, one of the oldest in Canada and a great place to walk and find good eats

  • Take a water taxi to Fisherman's Wharf: a short, scenic ride to a floating village with food shacks and sea life

  • Ride a seaplane if you feel like a splurging a little

  • Take a short boat tour of the harbour

  • If you have time, you can make this a multi-city trip by booking a day trip to Vancouver and back for under $100

A total budget of $400 for activities means you'll be able to do several of the above without stressing the budget.

Feeding

$500 for food over 4 nights in Victoria is comfortable enough. The city has a strong food scene with a lot of diversity. From dim sum and sushi to fresh seafood straight off the boat, your tastebuds will have the best time.

The Budget Breakdown

International: Montego Bay, Jamaica

While you can comfortably visit an Asian or European country with a $2,500 budget, we’re factoring in things like proximity, how much PTO you actually have, and even the colour of your passport, so we’ll be heading to Montego Bay, Jamaica. Five nights. Good weather. Great food. Let's go.

Both Air Canada and WestJeat fly direct from Toronto to Montego Bay, which makes this an easy international trip. The best time to visit is from late November through to May, when the weather is most reliable and flights are more competitively priced. Budget around $700 for a return ticket.

Where to Stay in Montego Bay, Jamaica

Most all-inclusive resorts in Jamaica won't fit comfortably inside this budget, so instead, look for a boutique hotel that includes breakfast for $1,200 or less for the 5 nights. This actually works in your favour because you'll stay in a more interesting neighbourhood, have the freedom to eat wherever you want to eat, and get a more authentic experience in general.

What to Do in Montego Bay, Jamaica

Jamaica has no shortage of things to do, and at $300 for activities you can choose from activites like bamboo river rafting, horseback riding on the beach, ATV riding, beach days, visiting Dunn's River Falls, etc. Pick two or three of these and you'll have a full, memorable trip without exhausting yourself or the budget.

Feeding

$300 for food across 5 nights goes a long way in Jamaica, especially if you eat where the locals eat. And jerk chicken from a roadside spot is one non-negotiable you must not skip. Not a restaurant. An actual roadside spot. You'll understand once you've had it.

The Budget Breakdown

Final Thoughts

And that's a wrap on the How Far Can Your Money Take You? series! We’ve covered nine destinations with three budgets, so now you have zero excuses.

$1,000 proved that you can start small. $1,500 showed you the sweet spot where additional comfort and value meet. And now, $2,500 has opened the door to even more special experiences – like wine tasting in Niagara-on-the-Lake, exploring an island in British Colombia, or enjoying jerk chicken on a Jamaican roadside.
