Without a doubt, Marrakesh is one of those destinations that perfectly combines relaxation, culture, food & adventure.
I spent 5 Days in Marrakesh celebrating my friend's 30th birthday, and we had the most amazing time. From beautiful gardens and waterfalls to cultural experiences with still enough time for rest and relaxation, you are bound to have the time of your life.

What You Need to Know Before Visiting Marrakesh
Before you start planning, here are the things that can make this trip much easier and save you time and money.
-
Best Time to Visit: Marrakesh is known for its sub-tropical weather, with mild winters and very hot summers, so the best times to visit Morocco are between March to May, and October to November to avoid extreme weather
-
Getting In: Marrakesh visa-free for up to 90 days for Canadian citizens
-
Currency: The official currency is the Moroccan Dirhams, but cash is king. You can exchange money or withdraw cash easily in the Medina and credit cards are accepted in some establishments
-
Getting Around: Download the Careem app for ground transportation
-
Language: useful phrases include “Salam alaykum” (hello), “Shukran” (thank you), “la shukran” (no thank you)
-
Connectivity: Skip the cost of roaming with your carrier by getting an Airalo eSIM.
-
Country Hopping: mention any destination that can pair well

Where to Stay in Marrakesh
A traditional riad is highly recommended for an authentic Moroccan experience. But for large groups like ours, I recommend finding a resort-style villa to keep the group together. These are usually outside of the main city, but very easily accessible with a car.
My Full 5-Day Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival & Architecture
We landed at Menara International Airport, Marrakesh (RAK), and booked an airport transfer here.
Everyone arrived at different times, so we kept things light after settling into the accommodation.
Historic sites like Ben Youssef Madrasa, Bahia Palace and El Badi Palace are good for the first day, and are a great introduction to Marrakesh's architecture.
We had dinner at M.bacha, a Moroccan-Asian fusion restaurant.

Day 2: Choose-Your-Own-Adventure Day
Everyone had the option to pick what we wanted based on their energy level.
-
Option A: Book a full day shared tour to Ourika Waterfalls & Atlas Mountains
-
Option B: Take a traditional Moroccan cooking class for an interactive and meaningful way to experience the culture

Day 3: Gardens, Museums & Local Evenings
Started the morning slow, enjoying breakfast at our accommodation.
Spent the afternoon exploring the Yves Saint Laurent Museum and Pierre Berge Museum of Berber Arts.
In the evening, visited the Souk for spice, ceramics, and souvenir shopping, and the Old Medina for a beautiful sunset dinner at DarDar Rooftop.
Tip: It’s best to visit the Souk in the early hours of the evening before it gets too busy.

Day 4: Hot Air Balloons in the Desert
We booked a sunrise hot air balloon ride for a peaceful and unforgettable morning viewing the Atlas Mountains.
Then went camel riding and quad biking in Agafay Desert. This was one of the highlights of the trip.
The shared tour included a ride to and from, a Moroccan dinner and a fire show.
Practical Tip: The hot air balloon rides are very early in the mornings, which can be a bit chilly, so dress accordingly.

Day 5: R & R Final Dinner
When in Morocco, you have to get some kind of traditional Hammam spa experience. Whether it's a steam bath, body scrub or a full massage, your body will thank you for it. Most accommodations offer it as an add-on, so simply ask for it.
We then ended our trip with a special dinner where the food, entertainment and service were all 10/10.

Where to Eat in Marrakesh
While we didn’t dabble into nearly enough Moroccan delicacies, Marrakesh genuinely had some amazing eats and I was pleasantly surprised. Here are some I’d recommend for a cautious first-timer.
-
DarDar rooftop (scenic rooftop view, yummy food and great service)
-
1112 Marrakech (breakfast)
-
M Bacha (Asian & Moroccan fusion)
-
Nouba Restaurant (for dinner + a show)
-
Nommos (for dinner + a show)
What to Pack for Marrakesh
Marrakesh’s tropical climate generally works for light, breathable clothing like linen or cotton outfits, along with comfortable walking shoes. Morocco is a predominantly Islamic country, so be respectful of cultural practices and err more on the modest side for dressing. Need a full packing guide? Final Thoughts on Marrakesh
Marrakesh is a vibrant city full of color and culture, but the key to enjoying it is not trying to do everything. Slow down. Choose experiences that feel right for you, and that way, you will find your Perfect Paths through the city.
While Marrakesh is not a place I’d personally recommend for a solo trip (especially as a woman), this destination is perfect for group trips, couples and families who want to experience the best of Marrakesh, Morocco.
