How Far Can Your Money Take You? The $1,500 Edition

Welcome back to the ‘How Far Can Your Money Take You?’ series. In my last post, I shared how far $1,000 can get you within Ontario, within Canada & also internationally. From a Prince Edward County road trip to a weekend in Buffalo, New York, we broke down exactly how $1,000 can go further than most people expect.
In today’s post, we are stepping the budget up to $1,500. I honestly think this is the sweet spot for most people as it's not super limited and should be enough to be genuinely comfortable. Let's get into it.
As always: This budget is for one person. Transportation, accommodation, food and activities, all included.

Within Ontario: Bruce Peninsula
If you've never been to Bruce Peninsula, this is your sign. The drive is about 3 hours from Toronto and is so worth it to see some of the most stunning turquoise waters we have in Ontario. This region is some dramatic cliffs, hiking trails and views that will surprise you. If you want to get the most out of it, three nights here is just the perfect amount of time.
Where to Stay
A chunk of the budget will be spent here, and it’s because you want to choose an accommodation/Airbnb near the water. You will feel justified in that spurge when you wake up on your first morning with the lake as your view.
What to Do
The good news is that Bruce Peninsula has a lot of free things to do. Budget $150 for activities and you'll likely not spend it all. These are some iconic experiences that cost you almost nothing:

Walking around Tobermory, which is the main hub of the peninsula.

Visiting the Grotto at Bruce Peninsula National Park. Your only cost here is the park entry fee.

Exploring Flowerpot Island by boat for a small fee.

Hike to Lion's Head Lookout.
Feeding
$350 for three nights is comfortable no matter how you approach it. Tobermory has some great spots for fresh food, and you can also supplement with groceries for a morning or two if you want to.
The Budget Breakdown
Within Canada: Quebec City
Quebec City is one of those places that feels like it shouldn't be in Canada and you have to see it for yourself to really understand. The cobblestone streets, the architecture, the food, the energy of Old Quebec is unlike anywhere else in the country. It’s only a 1.5hour flight from Toronto, and two to three nights is the perfect amount of time to actually explore on this budget.
P.S: if you opt to drive to Quebec from Toronto, then it could be worth it to extend your trip by a few days as it's an 8-9 hour drive.
Getting There & Getting Around
Flights from Toronto come in around $400 return on a budget airline if you book early. Once you're in the city, the key to keeping costs down is where you stay. Book an Airbnb in the heart of Old Québec and you won't need to rent a car as everything you’d want to see is walkable.
Airbnb prices can range anywhere from $300 to $900 for 3 nights depending on what you're looking for. A mid-range option puts you around $600. One thing worth knowing: if you're going with a friend or partner, sharing that accommodation cost will significantly reduce what each person pays. This budget works beautifully for two or more people splitting it.
What to Do
Wandering around Old Québec is an activity in itself. Just walk and you won’t run out of things to look at. Most of the neighbourhood is free to explore, with a few (very affordable) exceptions:

Ride the historic funicular that connects Upper and Lower Old Quebec for $6.

Notre-Dame de Quebec Cathedral, one of the most beautiful basilicas in the country.

A half-day group tour to Montmorency Falls & Île d'Orléans for $100.

Evening sightseeing river cruise: $85.
Which brings the total to about $229 for a weekend of activities.
Feeding
The rest of the budget can comfortably go towards food for three nights, as this city has incredible food at all price points. To be on the safe side, pick one meal per day to treat yourself and keep the others simple
The Budget Breakdown
International: Dominican Republic
This one practically plans itself. For just under $1,500, you can book 5 nights at an all-inclusive resort in the Dominican Republic. Yep, that's it. That's the trip. You show up, you put your bag down, and everything is taken care of. Flights, transportation, accommodation and food all in one single booking.
How it Works
An all-inclusive in the DR is one of the best value trips you can take, especially if you’re flying out of Toronto. Punta Cana is only a direct 4-hour flight away and has the right amount of white sand beaches and sunshine to keep you happy.
Booking directly through a package provider like Expedia, Sunwing, or Transat instead of piecing it together yourself is almost always cheaper than booking flights and resorts separately. With a $1,500 budget per person, you'll get:

A return flight from Toronto

5 nights in a resort with meals, snacks and drinks included

Pool access, beach access, and usually a full entertainment programme

Endless sand, water and sun

The all-inclusive package option also means that you’ll do all of your priority spending before you leave and the only extra you’ll need to think about is anything outside the resort. Excursions like dune buggies or snorkelling trips can cost between $60–$120 per person and are fun, but totally optional.
P.S: Travelling during shoulder season (May, June or November), can cost even further under $1,500, which gives you a little room for any extras.
The Budget Breakdown
Final Thoughts
$1,500 is the sweet spot, and I stand by that. All three options I shared above are trips that you'd genuinely look back on and be glad you took them. Bruce Peninsula gives you nature and breathing room close to home, Quebec City transports you all the way to Europe without leaving Canada, and the Dominican Republic gives you five nights of actual rest with zero decisions to make once you land.
