How Far Can Your Money Take You? The $1,000 Edition

A post I made about the CAD vs Euro exchange rate clearly hit a nerve and I think we all felt it. But here's the thing: a weak dollar doesn't mean we stop travelling. It just means getting smarter about how we do it.
So, I ran the numbers and will be sharing it in a short series called ‘How Far Can Your Money Take You?’ where I share how far a specific amount can take you within Ontario, within Canada & internationally.
Today we’re starting with $1,000. One person: transportation, accommodation, food and activities. All from Toronto. Without further ado, here's exactly where $1,000 Canadian dollars can take you and what that looks like across three very different trips.

Within Ontario: Prince Edward County
Only a 3-ish hour drive from Toronto, Prince Edward County is one of those places that feels like a proper escape without going that far. It’s a wine country, has beautiful landscapes, and excellent food and you can absolutely enjoy it with $1,000.
What to Do
-
Wine tasting ranges from $60–$199 per person. Plan for around $100 and you'll have a great experience.
-
Nordic Spa: An $85 weekday pass or a $95 weekend pass is worth every dollar for a full day of relaxing.
-
Base31 has a great range of activities and food spots inside and costs $0 to get in. You can budget around $100 here depending on what you get into.
Feeding
This is where you have to be strategic. The budget is tight enough so you can't be eating out for every meal. I suggest you pack some groceries to prep quick meals (probably breakfast) at the Airbnb, then choose other meals during the day to eat out. That way, you can actually enjoy a good meal without going over your budget.
The Budget Breakdown
You can conveniently find an activity for every kind of traveller at almost every price point in Prince Edward County, so here’s how to split the costs:
Within Canada: Halifax, Nova Scotia
I know you’re wondering about how to spend 4 nights in Halifax for $1,000. Well, it's tight, but it's possible. The waterfront, the seafood, and the people will make you realize just how much Halifax is underrated as a destination.
What to Do
-
Halifax has a surprisingly great lineup of free and low-cost activities. Maximize your time but spreading these activities over the 4 days:
-
Take a round-trip ferry to Dartmouth for $3. Explore, have a seafood burger on day one.
-
Start day two slowly, then stop by Playdium arcade and axe throwing for about $25–$30 each for a fun afternoon.
-
Then, walk the waterfront in the evenings for free. The views are genuinely beautiful and the cool breeze in the summer will surprise you in the best way.
-
Several museums are free on weeknights, so check the schedule and plan accordingly.
Feeding
Same approach as Prince Edward County. Get some groceries for quick meals at your accommodation, and choose one proper sit-down meal per day. Halifax has incredible seafood spots that are quite reasonable priced, so you don't need a big budget to eat well. You can do very well on a $250 feeding budget for your four nights if you're intentional about it.
*Splurge Option (outside budget): A perfume design class runs about $127 and is a genuinely unique experience. Worth it if you have a little flexibility in the budget.
The Budget Breakdown
International: Buffalo, New York
I know what you’re thinking; Buffalo?? To be honest, I really tried to find an international destination that would work inside $1,000 with the current exchange rate, but since the economy is not smiling on us right now, it would have to do. Even if Buffalo is only a 2-hour drive from Toronto, this trip absolutely counts as leaving the country and can be genuinely fun. Here’s a great way to spend a weekend in Buffalo from Toronto:
What to Do
-
Arriving around late afternoon/early evening on Friday gives you the rest of day one to explore downtown Buffalo. It's largely free and there's a lot to see. Trust me, the architecture alone is worth the walk.
-
Take the Buffalo sightseeing cruise for roughly $55 CAD to get a different perspective on the city and Lake Erie.
-
Then check out Buffalo AKG Art Museum, and look out for local food or art festivals happening at your time of visit.
-
Cross over to Niagara Falls on the US side for a couple of hours on your way back to Toronto. It adds almost no extra driving time and it's free to walk around. That way, you get to enjoy the view of the falls from the American side.
Feeding
-
Your leftover amount should give you more breathing room than the other two trips, and Buffalo has great food options at reasonable prices, so you can eat well here all weekend without worrying about the budget.
Connectivity
You’ll be outside Canada and will still need to stay connected. So instead of roaming through your carrier, you can get an eSIM here with 15% off using the code PERFECTPATHS15.
The Budget Breakdown
Final Thoughts
$1,000 can actually take you further than most people think, you just have to be smart about where it goes. The key across all three trips is the same: keep accommodation reasonable, be strategic with food and focus your spending on experiences that are actually worth it TO YOU.
Which of these three would you choose? Drop it in the comments and save this post for your next trip planning session. Part 2 of this series drops soon, and the budget gets bigger.
